Relax sailLyn & Peter Hoare on Ipomea 30/05/15 – 20/06/15

Adventure before Dementia!

We usually sail on flotilla because I (Lyn) like the company of others in the evenings (I am a chatterbox). This year we came out bareboat to meet up with ‘live-abroad’ friends who over winter in Finike.  Being 2 OAP’s we’ve taken things easy often staying an extra day in places we like.

Ipomea is a lovely boat to sail especially for just the two of us.  Thanks to Stef & Mark for their ideas & suggestions, also for their prompt response to one or two minor niggles.  The boat was well prepared and how lovely to have the beds made up for us with decent linen and duvets!

This was our sailing itinerary:

Sat 30/05:  Arrived, met Mark & Stef.  Had briefing with Mark and mooched around town.

Sun 31/05: Had briefing with Stef re places to visit.  Unpacked, shopping, ice creams.  As wind was a bit gusty we decided to postpone departure until the following day – went to bed early.

Mon 01/06: Got up at 6am, had breakfast, prepared boat and were off by 7:50.  Lovely calm sea.  Needed to be in Sarsala to meet our friends that evening.  Motored all the way as wind very light & on the nose.  Arrived 3pm (42.39m)

Tues 02/06: Lazy morning.  Chatted to friends & sailed to 22 Fathom Cove long way round, via almost Fethiye. (18.8m)

Weds 03/06: Walked to Ruin Bay & then onto Wall Bay.  Saw donkeys, tortoises & 3 large squid.  Walked back to 22 Fathom Cove for swim & dinner.  This is our new favourite place.  Recep has a “Restaurant Boat” moored in the cove which is where they all live, all the food is freshly cooked & organic.  Mamma makes amazing casseroles with assistance from her daughter.  Wild boar, goat, chicken or fish.  Absolutely delicious.  Everybody eats at the same time including the family.

Thurs 04/06: Had swim.  Weather looked threatening so motored to Tersane.  Dinner excellent – lamb. (4.28m)

Fri 05/06: Sailed to Fethiye & back into Boynuz Buku.  Called Mark as we had a problem with furling line. They sent someone to take a look, eased it for us.

Sat 06/06: Stayed in Boynuz Buku, mosquito spray on the table.  Free water from the spring & decent showers.  Walked up to the source of the spring, found it eventually, having gone the wrong way & decided it wasn’t worth it!

Sun 07/06: Back to 22 Fathom Cove

Mon 08/06: Sailed over to Yacht Classic in Fethiye.  Mooring is 1.5TL per foot if you eat in the restaurant    or 1.5Euro if you don’t.  Guess where we ate!

Tues 09/06:  After an early breakfast we phoned Mark & Stef re the furling line, they arranged for a new one to be fitted.  It was late when we left Fethiye to sail to Karacaoren.  If we hadn’t arranged to meet Mike & Debbie there we would have turned round. Winds up to 21-22knots & waves over 2 metres.  Sailed to start as wind increased started motor-sailing.  Glad to arrive in Karacaoren, lots of swell in the bay. (Moored to buoy with line ashore.  Jan from restaurant comes out to fix lines & take you to dinner) (17.1m)

Weds 10/06: Back to Yacht Classic for a rest!  Good sail with moderate swell. (17.5m)

Thurs 11/06: Explored Fethiye.  saw sunken gullet.  Weather looks threatening.  Were going to Deep Bay where Mr Dave moored to a buoy but headed down to 22 Fathom Cove again as it was further South.  We need to head West asap.  (16.4m)

Fri 12/06: Up at 5am!!  Had breakfast & motored out at 6:05!!  Beautiful morning.  Laid course for Serce Liamni. Slight sea. Very little wind (on the nose as usual) & as going so well decided to head towards Sogut.  2:30 wind picked up so sailed to Phoenix Restaurant.  Jetty very high.  Chef who helped with the lines fell in the sea! No English spoken.  Had a ice meal but expensive.  Owner there next morning – Geologist – very good English.

Sat 13/06: After a walk to see ruins, swim to see amphorae, chat to owner, sailed over to Sailors Paradise,  still one of our favourite spots. Mehmet pleased to see us again. (14.2m)

Sun 14/06: Lazy morning. Swim, showers, chats, decided to go to Marti Marina for its facilities.  Drifted towards Keci Buku until winds started fluking.  Martin Marina wanted 83Euros for one night when we phoned to enquire, so after a quick look round hot, windless Keci Buku decided to head back to new restaurant at Kuruca Buku.  Nobody spoke English but another couple translated for us.  Very pretty, bit exposed but very overpriced!!!  (Even more than Aurora).  Owner is a gullet Captain & obviously interested in making money!  Nice food though, no menu, no prices shown.

Mon 15/06: Another lazy morning.  Had swim & then shower.  Showers quite palatial but not much water pressure.  Had booked a table at Aurora so headed up there, tacking back & forth over gulf.  Lovely meal.  Really reasonable priced to our surprise.

Tues 16/06: Free bread from Aurora delivered to our cockpit so had bread & jam as well as muesli!  Mooched round shops for a few provisions & then headed off back to Sailors Paradise.

Weds 17/06: Sailed to Bozukkale, Mustafa remembered us.  Given cherry juice on arrival, brought out to the boat.  Nice meal.  Sailors House now has lovely new showers & loos with full length mirror.

Thurs 18/06: Were going to have a swim but wind picked up in bay so headed off.  No wind outside so motored into Serce for a swim & orange juice.  Bob pleased to see us & let us moor on his jetty even though we weren’t staying.  Decided to go onto Ciflik even if it meant motoring as they had electricity & water.  Had the best sail of holiday speeds mostly 6-7knots but occasionally up to 8.  Crowded in Ciflik but we were warmly welcomed in Azmak by Engin who had previously been at Rafet Baba.

Fri 19/06: Lazy morning.  Swim, orange juice, started packing, left at 3pm & had a brilliant sail back along the coast but motored up into Marmaris as too time consuming to tack back & forth!  safely back in the marina at 6:25 having refuelled & been pumped out.

  • Fantastic holiday! 318.8m total.  We will be back.
  • Favourite place East:  22 Fathom Cove
  • Favourite place West: still Sailors Paradise
  • Most improved facilities:  Sailors House Bozukkale
  • Most surprising value meal: Aurora Restaurant, Selimiye

Thanks to Stef & Mark – Lyn & Pete
